One of the first things couples usually mention when we start talking about their wedding invitations is color.

If they’re planning a coastal wedding, the conversation usually starts the same way.

“We’re thinking blue… maybe coral?”

It’s an understandable place to begin. When people imagine a wedding near the water, those are often the first colors that come to mind.

But once we start talking more about the actual celebration like the time of day, the setting, the atmosphere they want guests to feel, the palette usually shifts, something we refine together through the custom design process.

Because the coast itself isn’t just bright blues and seashells.

It’s much softer than that.

Looking at the Coast More Closely

When you spend time near the water, you start noticing the quieter colors.

The blue-gray of the ocean on an overcast morning.
The warm beige of sunlit sand.
The muted greens of sea grass.
The soft neutrals of weathered driftwood.

These tones often translate more naturally into wedding invitations, as seen throughout my coastal-inspired invitation designs. They still feel coastal, but in a way that feels refined rather than themed.

Color Inspiration From the Shoreline

Sometimes the palette comes from something simple, the tones of sand, shells, or the way light reflects off the water.

A palette inspired by these tones might include:

• Soft powder blue
• Warm sand
• Ivory
• Sea glass green

Even when an invitation design includes coastal details like a sailboat illustration or a shell motif, these softer tones keep the overall design feeling balanced.

Sunset Along the Water

Evening near the coast introduces an entirely different palette

• Muted blush
• Warm peach
• Soft blue-gray
• Cream

These tones capture the warmth of sunset along the water and translate beautifully into invitation designs that feel romantic and understated.

Refining the Wedding Invitation Color Palette

During our consultation, one of the first things I create is a design board.

The board includes a curated color palette along with textures, typography, and visual references that reflect the feeling of the wedding. Seeing everything together helps couples understand how those colors will actually translate onto paper.

Once the palette is clear, the rest of the invitation design begins to take shape naturally.

Coastal Invitations Are About Atmosphere

The most beautiful coastal invitations rarely try to recreate the beach directly.

Instead, they capture the atmosphere of being near the water: the softness of the light, the calmness of the colors, and the quiet elegance of natural textures.

When the palette reflects that atmosphere, the invitation becomes the first glimpse of the celebration to come.
